| KeyBoard Coach Learning How to Learn and Teach Keyboarding (Could precede "A Personal Touch to Typing" as part 1 of an all day keyboarding workshop) |
Employing pattern recognition and multisensory visualization of syllables as motor patterns, this alphabetic method motivates LD students via a guided orientation and language-based fluency building lessons that may precede any school program. An illustrated handbook, worksheets and non-competitive software provide a complete system to teach mind/body connection leading to immediate keyboarding for copying and for generative writing. |
| A personal touch to typing; Keyboard Coaching for dyslexic, dysgraphic, ADD and one-handed students. (Could follow "Keyboard Coach - learning how to learn" as part 2 of an all day keyboarding workshop.) |
The author will explain how she has adapted the Keyboard Coach method for students with a range of physical and learning disabilities; inviting a discussion about customizations of teaching the QWERTY keyboard and how to avoid performance anxiety. This workshop will provide: an overview of the basic method that teaches the alphabet and linguistic patterns; peripherals and keyboard adaptations; scaffolding, creative writing and rehearsal software; and the importance of generative writing activities to build fluency. |
| Using the computer to promote productivity for students with visual-spatial difficulties, dysgraphia and attention issues. | This workshop will share software and procedures to support students whose difficulties lie in the non-verbal domain: keyboard instruction that addresses mind body connection; using the Paperport scanner for worksheets; and templates that structure thinking. It will cover the use of the graphical organization and sequencing of computer programs for research note-taking, writing organization, scaffolding spelling and procedural memory, and to engage student attention for effective retrieval. |
| Keyboard Coach; A customizable system of teaching keyboarding to students with disabilities. | Developed for L.D. and A.D.D.(H.D.) students, this is a system that taps into fundamentals of teaching this critical skill to people who wish to use a regular QWERTY keyboard. This session will describe Keyboard Coach® method and how the author has adapted it for students with a range of physical and learning disabilities - stimulating a discussion of universal principles of teaching keyboarding and specific customizations for individual need. |
| Graphic Organizers to Develop Hierarchical Thinking; Database Templates for Note-Taking and Study | Templates for index card notes, bibliographies, mapping paragraph structure, personalized collection of vocabulary in context and essay organization capture student interest by tapping into visual strengths to teach categorization and study skills while harnessing the computer both to scaffold mechanical weakness and to aid retrieval. |
