StudentWorks© is a work in progress

Would you like to beta test StudentWorks?

Developed over the past six years, Studentworks© continues to evolve through my practice with a wide range of students. It provides a proven way to integrate the computer with study skills and vocabulary development. I am looking for teachers, schools, parents and tutors who would be interested in giving feedback on the existing files and about how best to match current school curricula. You need to be someone with knowledge of computers and database concepts. This is not a plug and play software, but implies that a coach is present. It is designed to complement good teaching practice at school or at home.

StudentWorks© is a customizable database program which was originally created in FileMaker Pro® 2 as one multi-function file. Since FileMaker Pro® 3 is now relational, StudentWorks© is being broken into discrete files that may be used individually or as parts of a related whole. I hope to complete this conversion by September 1997.

This database is networkable and cross platform. Students who use an individual file on a Macintosh in school may open and use it on Windows at home or visa versa. StudentWorks© will permit many students to synchronize their work into one file, making it ideal for curriculum group work.

Scripting permits any file to be used in conjunction with external scaffolding software such as word prediction and text-to-speech. Specific data from any set of records in any file may be exported to a preferred word processor. StudentWorks uses the built-in Claris spellcheck.

Currently, those who wish to use the templates must purchase FileMaker Pro®3 (Claris Corporation). As each module comes to completion, it will be available with a player. Schools that purchase a site license will be able to give copies of individual templates to students for home use. Several empty files or one data-filled file can fit on a single floppy disk.
